TikTok Starts Testing Its Instagram Rival In Australia

TikTok has started testing Notes, its Instagram-rivalling product, in Australia and Canada.

Details are scant on the app’s functionality, all TikTok has said is that “TikTok Notes is a lifestyle platform that offers informative photo-text content about people’s lives, where you can see individuals sharing their travel tips and daily recipes.”

However, the screenshots that TikTok has offered show Instagram-like carousels of photos with captions, likes, comments and saves. There is also the classic “For You” and “Following” feeds, which serve up images in two columns.

Users will be able to log in with their existing TikTok account.

The company said that it was in “the early stages of experimenting with a dedicated space for photos and text content.”

“We hope that the TikTok community will use TikTok Notes to continue sharing their moments through photo posts. Whether documenting adventures, expressing creativity, or simply sharing snapshots of one’s day, the TikTok Notes experience is designed for those who would like to share and engage through photo content,” it added.

So is this just another case of the social media players copying each other? There was much brouhaha about Instagram’s Twitter rival, Threads, which launched last year. To date, it hasn’t really seemed to take off.

Similarly, Instagram, Facebook and YouTube have all copied TikTok’s scrolling, algorithm-driven short-form video content with Reels and Shorts.

At the moment, however, it remains unclear when TikTok will expand the app to more countries or offer advertising on the platform.
