Google Adds AAP, SBS And More To News Showcase Initiative
Google’s News Showcase will have more content from Australian publishers available, after the tech giant signed new deals with AAP, SBS, Independent Australia and Women’s Agenda.
The News Showcase is part of Google’s $1 billion commitment to supporting news media and launched late last year as a way to compensate publishers for their content.
It made headlines earlier this year as Google looked to negotiate payments with local media companies as part of the government’s News Media Bargaining Code.
Available on mobile and desktop, the News Showcase displays suggested stories from select publishers in panels, providing these sites with “high-value traffic”.
The likes of Nine, News Corp and Seven West Media have all since signed on for the News Showcase.
The latest round of deals with AAP, SBS, Independent Australia and Women’s Agenda will provide a more diverse range of content for readers.
“We’re pleased to reach agreements with these outlets, which are all well regarded for producing comprehensive public interest journalism,” said Google’s Head of ANZ News Partnerships & APAC News Program Management Shilpa Jhunjhunwala. “These latest agreements build on the significant support we’ve provided to the Australian news industry over the last two decades.”
“Over the past few months, we’ve signed agreements with 18 Australian news outlets, networks and associations. These range in size from large publishers to small community newspapers. We are continuing talks with a range of other Australians news publishers.”
AAP CEO Emma Cowdroy said: “We are pleased to feature on Google News Showcase, which will see the inclusion of our independent newswire stories.
“Our high-quality journalism is vital to the Australian journalism industry and Google’s support helps us to continue our objective of creating quality news content which helps better inform all Australians.”
SBS Director, News and Current Affairs Mandi Wicks added: “SBS has a unique role in Australia’s media landscape providing trusted, accurate and impartial news and information in more than 60 languages, including essential services to multicultural and First Nations Australians. Through SBS’s agreement with Google, we hope to reach more Australians. The Showcase agreement recognises the importance of exploring and celebrating diverse perspectives for the purposes of increasing understanding between Australians.”
Independent Australia Founder and Publisher David Donovan said: “Google has been an absolute pleasure to deal with. We are very excited to be part of Google News Showcase, which is another avenue for us to promote our ground-breaking investigations and stringently fact-checked articles. We look forward to continuing our productive business relationship well into the future.”
Women’s Agenda Publisher & Co Founder Angela Priestley: “As an independent news publication that’s 100 per cent female-owned and run, we’re excited to be joining the Google News Platform to further share our daily news journalism. We’re also incredibly grateful to the Google team for creating this opportunity, in supporting us to get our news content in front of a wider audience and ultimately our mission to deliver stronger journalism in the future.”
