triple j’s Requestival Is Back And The Strangeness Is Just Getting Started

In the midst of last year’s lockdown triple j launched a new initiative to bring some joy to the many listeners who were having a tough time.

The radio network relinquished all control over its song selection, instead opening it up to listeners as part of the first-ever ‘Requestival’.

The initiative was a hit, with listeners able to hear some of their favourite songs played on the airwaves. triple j said they received over 100,000 requests during last year’s Requestival.

As well as giving listeners control, it also allowed some to show off their rather eccentric, edgy and oftentimes completely bizarre music taste.

Highlights from 2020 included Beethoven’s ‘Symphony No.5’, ‘I’ll Make A Man Out Of You’ from Mulan and ‘The Time is Now’ by wrestler John Cena.

This year’s Requestival only kicked off yesterday, but already it seems listeners will be showing flair in their song choices.

Already in day one, High School Musical track ‘Bet On It’ got a run, as did ‘Tokyo Drift’ by the Teriyaki Boyz.

This morning, we had ‘Chug Jug With You’ by Levianthan – a 13-year-old YouTuber who has found fame for remixing Estelle’s ‘American Boy’ with lyrics about Fortnite.

Requestival is set to run all week and if the first two days are anything to go by, we can expect to hear a wide range of music on the channel this week.
