The use of cash was frowned upon during the pandemic but more than one-third of Australian shoppers intend to use cash to pay for Christmas presents this year.

The latest Catalyst survey from research platform Glow shows that of the 1,222 consumers quizzed, 36 per cent said they would use cash to buy presents this Christmas.

“With the use of cash banned in many places during the pandemic, consumers got used to paying with other forms of money,” said Glow Founder and CEO Tim Clover (pictured).

“So to see more than one-third of consumers go back to cash we thought was really interesting.”

Clover said credit and debit cards are still the preferred payment option for Christmas shoppers with 48 per cent saying they will use a credit card and 47 per cent a debit card. 32 per cent will use PayPal and 15 per cent BNPL options such as AfterPay, ZIP and OpenPay.

When looking at age group behaviour, a debit card is the preferred option of those aged 18 to 24 (50 per cent), debt and credit cards are equally popular with the 25 to 44s at 51 per cent, 45 per cent for both credit and debit cards for those aged 45 to 54 and credit cards the preferred payment method by the 55 and over at 48 per cent.

Gen Z (18 to 24-year-olds) is most likely to use a BNPL option at 21 per cent compared to just 9 per cent of Baby Boomers (those aged 55 and over). 40 per cent of Baby Boomers intended to use cash – the highest of any age group, although Gen Z was second most likely at 38 per cent.

Men were more likely to use cash compared to women (40 per cent to 33 per cent) and a Credit Card (53 per cent to 42 per cent).

Women were more likely to use a Debit Card (48 per cent to 45 per cent), a BNPL service (17 per cent to 12 per cent) and PayPal (33 per cent to 31 per cent).
