New reports from Boomtown has revealed Australian regional cities are experiencing population and economic growth as people move away from metro areas, leading to a new spotlight series.

Launching today, Boomtown’s ‘City Spotlight’ series places the spotlight on nine key regional hubs that are experiencing a renaissance as Australians continue to embrace sea and tree changes and the work from anywhere phenomenon.

The nine cities chosen include Toowoomba and the Gold Coast in Queensland, Wollongong and Newcastle in NSW, Geelong and Bendigo in Victoria, Hobart in Tasmania, Darwin in the Northern Territory, and Canberra/Queanbeyan. These individual reports unpack the diverse economic, community, and cultural attributes of these cities and investigate what makes their local audiences tick.

Dave Walker, director of trading & sales operations at Seven West Media, said: “The pandemic has changed how we all live and work, and this new normal has supercharged regional cities with thousands of Australians evaluating where they want to be long-term. Recent Australian Bureau of Statistics research1 backs this up – with regional population growth outpacing that of metro areas for the first time in four decades.

“We know regional Australia offers many people a better quality of life due to the lower cost of living, and now that a lot of us have greater flexibility around working, thousands of Australians are making these communities their home. This means a world of opportunity awaits advertisers.

“Australia has 19 cities, and 14 of those are in regional areas. The audience in these Boomtowns exceeds nine million people. With the profile of these audiences exceedingly encompassing young professionals and digital nomads, there’s never been a better time to look to regional Australia to get real cut through and ROI with advertising messaging.”

The reports, launching today, are the first in the City Spotlight series, with more to be launched later in the year.
