Paramount Offers Up A Billion & Goes Into Bat For The Cricket Rights

According to reports, Paramount, who owns Network 10, has offered Cricket Australia $1.5 billion to secure the rights to test matches and the Big Bash League.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that the offer would break down to over $200 million annually and extend for a reported seven years.

However, despite the huge offer Cricket Australia is reportedly still in talks with Seven and Foxtel, who currently have the rights to cricket.

Although Seven’s relationship with Cricket Australia is a little complicated, Seven recently took Cricket Australia to court, claiming there had been violations in their contract.

Paramount’s money move comes after the Cricket’s last season average viewer number was reduced to 386,000, which is a drop of 46 per cent.

Network 10 spokesperson told B&T: “Network 10 revolutionised the game. BBL became cemented in Australian culture as the family’s favourite summer sport. Ratings increased by 400 per cent, and crowds returned to the grounds.

“In 2015, Network 10 attracted an average of 721,000 viewers per game, and live crowds averaged more than 28,000 a match.

“Network 10 has become a very profitable organisation and has deep financial resources with the benefit of access to the latest technology and sports broadcasting development through our sister company CBS Sports, we are a powerful and dynamic potential new partner for cricket and other sports.

“We have the commitment to deliver a premium product with greater visibility, consistency and flexibility across all forms of cricket; the network would provide blanket domestic coverage and take the sport to a new and freshly engaged audience.

“Network 10 and Paramount+ are keen to restore cricket to its former prominence, ignite the love affair between Australians and this great sport and provide the quality of coverage that television audiences and fans deserve.”
