The 2021 Oscars were the sight of a number of important and significant firsts. However, the ceremony was also host to some bizarre moments.

From Best Supporting Actor winner Daniel Kaluuya shouting out his parents for having sex, to Glenn Close performing the dance to E.U.’s 1988 banger ‘Da Butt’, to Best Actress winner Frances McDormand doing a wolf howl in her acceptance speech, the ceremony had some particular highlights.

Significanly, Chloe Zhao became the first woman of colour and the second woman ever to win the award for Best Director for her film Nomadland.

Youn Yuh-jung became the second Asian woman and first Korean to win the Best Supporting Actress award, while Anthony Hopkins became the oldest actor to recieve the Best Actor award

However, viewers critiqued some odd choices, such as announcing Best Picture, usually the closing award, before Best Actress and Best Actor.

The decision was speculated to be because Chadwick Boseman, who died last year due to colon cancer, was winning the Best Actor award. However, when the time came, Anthony Hopkins actually won the award.

Hopkins, however, was not present to accept the award, making the choice to have his win as the finale of the ceremony particularly unusual. Today, Hopkins posted an acceptane speech to his Instagram and paid tribute to Boseman’s immense talent.

The In Memoriam section, arguable one of the ceremony’s most moving elements, also recieved backlash as it seemed to be far more sped up than in previous years.

In classic fashion, the internet reacted to the high and low points of the ceremony with buckets of humour – suggesting that no matter how low Oscar ratings get, they are still an essential source for Twitter jokes.
