Whoops! Nine’s “Error” Sees Its Commonwealth Games Accreditation Suspended

Channel Nine has had its media accreditation for the Commonwealth Games (which start on the Gold Coast tomorrow) suspended after it showed footage of the opening ceremony dress rehearsal over the weekend.

The broadcaster filmed the practice run on Saturday night and showed the footage on its 6pm news bulletin the following day.

Channel Seven is the official Games broadcaster and will broadcast the actual opening ceremony tomorrow night in prime-time.

Games organisers, the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Corporation (GOLDOC), immediately suspended Nine’s accreditation “until further notice” saying the airing of the footage had breached confidentiality agreements.

In a statement, GOLDOC said: “Channel Nine News broadcast footage of Saturday night’s opening ceremony dress rehearsal, which breached news access rules and accepted industry conventions regarding confidentiality of Games ceremonial rehearsals. GOLDOC expects all media organisations to abide by the agreed rules.”

A spokesperson for Nine described the incident as an “error” and said the broadcaster hoped to have the accreditation reinstated soon. In a statement to B&T, the spokesperson said: “An error was made in our news last night, we are in discussions with the Commonwealth Games authorities to restore our accreditation and hope to have the situation resolved as soon as possible.”
