So far OpenAI’s ChatGPT has been a little uninspiring, as it throws up copy that sounds like it was written by a pre-schooler and all with the depth of a kid’s wading pool.
However, that’s not to say the tech won’t improve rapidly and there are now legitimate fears it could possibly be manoeuvring itself for your job.
Now a new study in collaboration with ChatGPT creator, OpenAI and the University of Pennsylvania has looked at the impact of large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT will have on jobs and the labour market overall.
The research found that any adverse effects from the tech won’t spare any demographic or salary range and, in fact, it noted that professions requiring degrees are more at risk than blue collar jobs.
It found that approximately 80 per cent of the US workforce could have at least 10 per cent of their work tasks impacted, while around 19 per cent of workers may see at least half of their tasks impacted by the introduction of AI tools like ChatGPT.
It found these occupations were most at risk:
- Mathematicians
- Tax agents
- Financial quantitative analysts
- Writers and authors
- Web and digital interface designers
- Court reporters,
- Simultaneous captioners
- Proofreaders
- Copy markers.
Other occupations that should also have cause for concern include accountants and auditors, news analysts, journalists and administrative assistants.
The study said that where language bots will be most successful will be in areas such as sequential data, including assembly language, protein sequences and chess games.
And to add even more fear, the research found that AI’s introduction into the workplace would have “notable economic, social, and policy implications”.
The research also developed a list of jobs that it believed would NOT be affected by the technology. These included:
- Agricultural Equipment Operators
- Athletes and Sports Competitors
- Auto Mechanics
- Cement Masons
- Cooks
- Cafeteria Attendants
- Bartenders
- Dishwashers
- Electrical Power-Line Installers and Repairers
- Carpenters
- Painters
- Plumbers
- Meat, Poultry, and Fish Cutters and Trimmers
- Slaughterers and Meat Packers
- Stonemasons
