Australia’s favourite video streaming service has been revealed, with US offerings Netflix, Amazon Prime and Disney+ dominating the local market.

According to the Telsyte Australian Subscription Entertainment Study 2021as of June 30 2021, there are six million Australians subscribed to Netflix.

This subscriber figure was more than double that of the next biggest service Amazon Prime, which had 2.9 million Australians with active accounts and Disney+, which has 2.6 million.

Local operation Stan was next on the list with 2.4 million subscribers, according to Telsyte. This figure is consistent with the number announced by Nine during its latest earnings report.

And while Netflix continues to dominate the local market, the data shows the entire SVOD market grew 16 per cent year-on-year, with the average household now subscribing to 4.3 entertainment services (this includes music and gaming services).

Kayo’s success is backed by a growing demand for sports services, with this category growing 48 per cent year-on-year.

“Australians are clearly attracted to big production movies, TV shows and sporting codes they follow year on year, and are collecting subscriptions on the way” Telsyte Managing Director Foad Fadaghi said.

As more streaming services enter into the market, Telsyte predicts the demand for SVOD to continue over the next few years.

By June 2025, total SVOD subscriptions in Australia could reach 26 million, with higher multiple subscriptions and new services.
