Afterpay Gets Into In-App Advertising With Afterpay Ads

There’s another big name getting into advertising, with confirmation Afterpay will start serving in-app ads.

The Buy Now, Pay Later platform – which was recently acquired by Square for $39 billion – revealed the plans for Afterpay Ads yesterday, which will allow brands to place featured ads across the Afterpay app.

While Afterpay has proven popular with brands and customers in recent years on the back of its modern lay-by service, the announcement confirmed brands are increasingly using Afterpay to acquire new customers, with 30 million referrals sent to retailers from the app each month.

“Our merchant partners already rely on Afterpay as one their most valuable channels to acquire and reach the next generation of shoppers – Millennial and Gen Z shoppers who represent the vast majority of the spending power in the market today,” said Afterpay Chief Strategy Officer Mark Teperson.

“Afterpay Ads unleash the power of our ecosystem by giving brands a new way to promote products, collections and offers to Afterpay’s highly engaged young audience of shoppers.”

With Afterpay Ads, brands will be able to promote deals, products and collections via the sponsored listing formats.

Afterpays says advertisers will be charged when a shopper actually engages with the ad.

Early tests suggest Afterpay Ads has lifted sales as much as 20 per cent for brands.
