“Massively Offensive!” Paint Ad Slammed As Misogynistic, As Brand Defends “Humour”

An ad for paint is causing a real stir in the UK and has the ad watchdog considering a ban after it was deemed misogynistic and offensive to women.

The spot for Crown Paints features a number of actors comically singing about a couple called Hannah and Dave.

Although intended to be humorous, one line is causing all the rage. The lyric goes: “Now a baby’s coming and they don’t know what it is. Hannah’s hoping for a girl, Dave’s just hoping that it’s his.”

Check out the spot below:

Britain’s ad watchdog, the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA), is now investigating the spot after it received 60 complaints from viewers. ASA said it was “currently assessing [the complaints] carefully to determine whether there are grounds for an investigation”.

British comic Jenny Eclair was first to call the spot out on social media. See Eclair’s tweet below:

Soon everyone was tweeting their agreement.

“I saw this yesterday Jenny & thought exactly the same. Glad it’s not just me,” tweeted one person.

Another added: “Said the same thing, really offensive.”

However, the paint brand defended the work. In a statement, a Crown Paints spokesperson said: “Our ads are intended to give a humorous account of our characters’ stories.

“We appreciate that people have differing tastes when it comes to humour and whilst the ad has been broadly well received, we apologise if the remark has caused offence to anyone.”
