Nine’s Hamish Turner Tapped As Director Of 9Now

Hamish Turner (lead photo), currently Nine’s program director has expanded his responsibilities to become director of 9Now and programming.

Nine reports that in 2021, the 9Now platform has seen 53 per cent growth in its live streaming, driven particularly by the structural change in the growth of connected TVs, and a 23 per cent increase on-demand viewing.

9Now was the first to introduce mandatory sign-on giving it a logged in audience of over 11 million Australians. It was were the first to commission for the BVOD platform with shows like Love Island Australia fundamentally changing the industry’s perception of how an audience can watch TV via online platforms. It recently partnered with NBCUniversal which has seen us invest in the platform and grow the 9Now active userbase which is now in the millions every month.

Events like last week’s NRL Grand Final show how important 9BVOD can be. This year 363,000 watched on 9Now and Nine expects that number to materially grow in the future.

Commenting on Turner’s appointment, Nine’s director of television, Michael Healy and its chief digital officer, Alex Parson, said in a joint statement: “The change in Hamish’s role signals our focus on the next steps in 9Now’s growth and his brief is to lead 9Now as we embark on the next stage of growth as part of Australia’s leading TV platform.

“Tonight’s launch of Love Island Australia will again challenge how the industry defines TV success. Overnight linear numbers are no longer the sole metric of success but we’re definitely getting better as a business at telling the Total TV story and Hamish’s brief will be to continue to drive 9Now as the leading commercial Australian TV platform.”
