With reports of a futuristic satellite billboard emerging this week, it is no surprise to learn that Elon Musk and Dogecoin are both involved.

According to a report in Insider, Canadian technology start-up Geometric Energy Corporation (GEC) has detailed plans to launch a satellite – to be named CubeSat – that will have a display screen attached to the exterior, essentially serving as an outer space billboard.

Advertisements on the display screen will be filmed with a ‘selfie-stick’ and live-streamed back down on earth via YouTube or Twitch.

Speaking to Insider, GEC co-founder and CEO Samuel Reid said advertisers will have to purchase different tokens to design and project their ad on the billboard.

This new system will democratise the process, according to Reid.

“I’m trying to achieve something that can democratise access to space and allow for decentralised participation,” Reid said. “Hopefully, people don’t waste money on something inappropriate, insulting or offensive.”

He envisaged a system where both brands and individuals are purchasing ad space on CubeSat.

“There might be companies which want to depict their logo … or it might end up being a bit more personal and artistic,” Reid said. “Maybe Coca-Cola and Pepsi will fight over their logo and reclaim over each other.”

What about Elon Musk and Dogecoin?

So where do Elon Musk and his beloved Dogecoin fit into the CubeSat picture?

When it comes to buying the tokens that are required to get an ad projected, GEC will be collecting payments in Dogecoin, according to Gizmodo.

This is not just because GEC is interested in receiving payments in cryptocurrency, rather, the firm has been appointed to lead the DOGE-1 mission in collaboration with SpaceX, which has been hailed as the start of the ‘cryptocurrency space race’.

SpaceX is an aerospace company owned by Elon Musk.

As part of the mission, GEC will be getting its CubeSat satellite on-board SpaceX’s upcoming lunar mission.

The deal has been entirely paid for in Dogecoin, making good on Musk’s goal to take Dogecoin to the moon.

The DOGE-1 mission is set to launch early next year.
