B&T’s Tokyo Olympics Wrap: Earthquakes, Ankles & Simone Biles
The Tokyo Olympics has proven to be both a winner for Seven and a winner for Aussie’s morale. Suddenly we can all make small talk about something besides the daily COVID-19 press conference.
Sadly, the Olympics won’t last forever, but for now, we get to enjoy watching Sunrise reporter, Mark Beretta survive an earthquake, live at the games.
Beretta continued his sports report despite the 5.8 magnitude earthquake that was causing him to shake.
Beretta was reporting from atop a 10-storey building. Thankfully, the earthquake passed and everyone was fine.
"Welcome back to the Olympic city where we are currently in an earthquake"@MarkBeretta just powered through his sports report while Tokyo was being hit by a tremor 👊🏻 pic.twitter.com/O4pUxM1yHD
— Sunrise (@sunriseon7) August 3, 2021
Beretta can now return safely to his ungodly early morning starts at Sunrise. Admittedly, that might be more tiring than surviving a minor earthquake.
However, the Olympics doesn’t just provide natural disasters, it provides feel-good, and dare we say inspiring moments?
Dutch runner Sifan Hassan was competing in the women’s 1500m heat when she fell. But Hassan got up and managed to not just limp to the finish line, but take off racing and win!!
This extraordinary moment gave real meaning to the phrase – dust yourself off and try again.
Naturally, Twitter loved it!
As a lifelong runner I can tell you this is one of the most incredible finishes you’ll ever see.
Sifan Hassan falls w/400M to go, gets back up, & wins her heat in the first round of the women’s 1,500. 🤯

Never give up!
Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands tripped with one lap to go in a preliminary heat of the women's 1500m but got back up to continue the race.

Dutch star Sifan Hassan (who is attempting to win gold in the 1,500, 5K and 10K) falls just before the bell in the first round of the women’s 1,500m.
BUT…she gets back up and wins her heat in 4:05.17.

After facing a big week of public scrutiny, US gymnast Simone Biles, who withdraw from several competitions citing mental health, returned to compete and she didn’t just compete she won bronze!
After her win, Biles told reporters that one of the reasons her mental health had taken a hit the week before, was because her beloved aunty had tragically passed away.
Arguably, this information made Piers Morgan look even more insensitive than usual.
*NEW COLUMN*
Sorry Simone Biles, but there’s nothing heroic or brave about quitting because you’re not having ‘fun’ – you let down your team-mates, your fans and your country.https://t.co/gxNC7kOMN2 pic.twitter.com/eIlZsqqRHo— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) July 28, 2021
Biles win was met with an outpouring of love on Twitter.

.@Simone_Biles winning that Bronze medal makes me so happy. ❤️❤️ I just love how she refuses to stop rising and how she bats her haters off like tiny flies. The entire US women’s gymnastics team are just amazing humans. Do it, ladies!!! 🙅🏿♀️🙌🏿 pic.twitter.com/uWqLffM5ef

In, oh dear news, Irish boxer Aidan Walsh was forced to withdraw from the men’s welterweight semi-final, because of an ankle injury.
Except Walsh didn’t get his injury from training or competing, instead Walsh hurt his ankle when he was celebrating his last win.
Walsh got a little too excited and did a little bit too much jumping for joy and unfortunately injured himself.
However, it wasn’t all bad news for the overexcited Irishman, he still collected a bronze medal in men’s welterweight, sadly, Walsh was on crutches when he collected it.

In disappointing news, Australian rugby and football players are under investigation for allegedly behaving poorly on their flights home from the Olympics.
The Olympics sevens team and the Olyroos are now being investigated by their respective clubs, Rugby Australia and Football Australia.
#BREAKING I'm hearing the Olyroos may also have been involved in the booze-fueled misbehaviour on a Japan Airlines flight home. JAL have written to AOC to complain. FFA working on a statement now. #7Olympics #Tokyo2020 #football
