All The Media Folk In This Year’s AFR Rich List
The AFR has released its annual rich list, detailing the 200 wealthiest people in Australia.
Topping the list this year for the second year running was Gina Rinehart, with a fortune of $31.06 billion – up slightly from $28.8 billion the year prior.
And while industries such as resources, property, technology and finance were dominant in the rich list, there were still a few familiar faces from the media industry that made the list.
The highest-ranked media personality was Seven West Media chair Kerry Stokes, who finished 13th on the list with a wealth of $7.18 billion.
Although Stokes is best-known for his involvement with Seven, it is his work in the resources sector that drives much of his wealth.
The next highest was Lachlan Murdoch at 22nd. Eldest son of Rupert has a wealth of $4.43 billion, mostly from his News Corp involvement but in part due to his interests in Nova and Stars Group.
Prudence MacLeod was next at 32nd spot. With a fortune of $2.24 billion, MacLeod – who is the daughter of Rupert Murdoch – is now said to be investing more into philanthropy following the sale of 21st Century Fox to Walt Disney.
Next was another familiar name in that of Gretel Packer in 50th spot ($1.77 billion) who last year made an emergency donation to the Carriageworks precinct amid the pandemic.
Joy Chambers-Grundy was 122th with $871 million. She is the second wife of TV pioneer Reg Grundy and has recently partnered with the Australian Academy Cinema Television Arts to create a $50,000 prize in Reg’s name for most original concept for a TV show.
WIN’s owner Bruce Gordon was next on the list at 123rd. His $870 million fortune was recently bolstered by a new deal with Nine broadcasting deal.
The final media personality on the list was John Singleton in 147th spot. With $728 million in wealth, Singleton recently bid farewell to the advertising agency he created, with WPP plc completing the takeover of WPP AUNZ, which of course, grew from his agency STW.
