Google Maps Out Return To Office

Seattle, USA - Aug 19, 2019: The new Google building in the south lake union area at twilight.

Google’s global CEO is encouraging workers to start returning to the office, outlining a long-term vision of a hybrid model.

In an email to staff, Google CEO Sundar Pichai said the company has already seen nearly 60 per cent of staff return to the office in regions where the COVID situation is relatively under control.

He said that moving forward, Google will offer workers a ‘more flexible work week’, which will see staff spend approximately three days in the office and two days working ” wherever they work best”.

There will also be ‘work-from-anywhere weeks’ available for staff and ‘focus time’ where internal meetings are limited to allow staff the opportunity to focus on certain projects.

“For more than 20 years, our employees have been coming to the office to solve interesting problems — in a cafe, around a whiteboard, or during a pickup game of beach volleyball or cricket. Our campuses have been at the heart of our Google community and the majority of our employees still want to be on campus some of the time,” Pichai said.

“Yet many of us would also enjoy the flexibility of working from home a couple days of week, spending time in another city for part of the year, or even moving there permanently. Google’s future workplace will have room for all of these possibilities.”

Last year Pichai said Google would ultimately move to turn its offices into ‘on-sites’, where staff who mostly work from home can gather in-person at set times.

Alphabet (Google’s parent company) recently announced it had just under 140,000 direct employees globally.

Google’s move to get workers back in the office goes against many other large tech companies who have been touting work-from-home forever policies following the pandemic.

Atlassian and Twitter have bother recently confirmed long-term work-from-home policies for workers who don’t plan on returning to the office.
