Revealed: Australia’s Media Richest

The Australian has revealed the wealthiest individuals in the media industry as part of its annual rich list.

Just three media personalities made ‘The List’, which is calculated based on publicly available information such as share prices and property values.

Seven West Media’s chair Kerry Stokes [pictured] was the highest-ranked media personality, finishing 10th on the list with an individual worth of $7.26 billion.

And while Stokes has helped reduce Seven’s debt pile and increase the share price over the past 12 months, most of his wealth still comes from his involvement in the mining sector.

Lachlan Murdoch was next, finishing 21st on the list with a value of $3.62 billion.

After spending $110 million to buy a 50 per cent stake in Nova in 2009, Murdoch now owns the entire company with a value of more than $1 billion. He also made a significant amount from his share in the $US71 billion merger between Disney and 21st Century Fox in 2019.

At 113 on the list, WIN Corporation owner Bruce Gordon was the third and final media personality on the rich list, with a value of $1.07 billion. As well as WIN, he is also the largest individual shareholder in Nine Entertainment and a major shareholder in Prime Media.

Last week it was revealed Gordon was pushing for a seat on Nine’s board after a deal between WIN and Nine was announced.
