Messenger Gets A Colourful Logo Refresh

If you’re a Facebook Messenger user, you might have noticed a colourful change in recent days.

Early last week, the app changed its logo from blue to purple to better reflect the company’s new direction.

“Our new logo reflects a shift to the future of messaging, a more dynamic, fun, and integrated way to stay connected to the people you’re close to. We hope you like it as much as we do,” Messenger said in a statement.

The new purple tone of the logo is very similar to the purple used in the Instagram logo – and this is no coincidence.

Last month Messenger and Instagram announced a new cross-app communication feature, allowing users in North America to chat between the Facebook-owned apps.

The new logo nods to this interoperability.

Messenger also said it wants the app to be more than a messaging service, with COVID-19 making face-to-face communication increasingly challenging.

“Over the past six months, we’ve been busy launching products and features that make it easier and more fun to be with your friends and family when you can’t be together in person, whether that’s popping into a virtual room to catch up, or watching funny videos together,” Messenger said.

“You can even easily connect with many of your favorite small businesses, even if you can’t visit them IRL.”
