Instagram Turns 10 And Launches A Host Of New Monetisation Features

Photo and video sharing app Instagram has celebrated its 10th birthday with a host of big announcements.

Instagram boss Adam Mosseri shared a blog post earlier this week, reflecting on the past decade and announcing some future-focused initiatives.

AFL player Tayla Harris managed to get a mention – alongside Beyoncé and the Pope – for starting a national conversation about sexism in sport.

“From fashion, to food, to entertainment, to travel, to the emergence of #weeklyfluff, people on Instagram have shaped the world around them,” said Mosseri.

Discussing the future of the app, Mosseri outlined a number of new initiatives to promote shopping on the platform and help creators more easily monetise their content.

On IGTV, shoppers can now watch and buy an item within a few taps, with shoppable videos set to be introduced to Instagram Shop soon.

It comes as Instagram reveals 90 per cent of users on the platform follow some sort of business.

“Over the coming months, you’ll see some major changes from us, like tabs for Reels and shopping, and some big improvements to messaging.

“We’ll look to accelerate ways for creators to make a living and for small businesses to sell their products. Through all these changes, our community will remain the heart of Instagram, and we’ll stay focused on keeping people safe and building new features that fight bullying, improve equity, address fairness, and help people feel supported.”
