Queensland Art Gallery Launches New Podcast On Kinderling Kids
The Queensland Art Gallery | Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) and Kinderling Kids, Australia’s fastest growing digital radio station, have launched a new podcast called Outside The Lines – A QAGOMA Kids Podcast About Art. The ten episode series takes kids on an audio adventure, diving into the creative minds of some of Australia’s most inspiring contemporary artists.
Outside The Lines , co-produced by Kinderling Kids, is a fun and immersive audio experience that encourages children to think about art, ideas and to express themselves creatively. Hosted by characters Pip, Lottie, Rose, Kip, Marcel and Holiday, the podcast explores the artistic process by fostering in children an understanding of the importance of art to one’s individual life, as well as enriching society and culture.
Each episode features children interviewing a well-known Australian artist about their ideas, creative practice and the importance of art in their life, and offers children some practical tips for their own creative journey.
Contemporary Australian artists featured in upcoming episodes include Angela Tiatia, Ben Quilty, Dale Harding, Elisa Jane (Leecee) Carmichael, Gemma Smith, Isabel & Alfredo Aquilizan, Jemima Wyman, Raquel Ormella, Ross Manning and Tony Albert.
Created for children aged 5 – 10 years old, the podcast offers an introduction to art and creativity. It encourages children to answer key questions like: What is creativity? What is imagination? How do you ‘make’ art? Does it matter what other people think? How do I start?.
Created in collaboration between QAGOMA and Kinderling Kids, with the support of the Neilson Foundation, Outside The Lines gives the opportunity for all children to experience art and be challenged by new ideas whether at home, on the move, or on-demand, through the converging audio and in-person art experiences.
QAGOMA head of public engagement Tamsin Cull said: “QAGOMA is committed to engaging with audiences in innovative ways. Last year, we started to talk to Kinderling about creating an art podcast for kids, and when COVID-19 changed the way people access arts organisations, it seemed more important than ever to create content that could be enjoyed any time, from home.
“We are so thrilled to be partnering with Kinderling on this initiative! The podcast provides children with the opportunity to hear directly from some of Australia’s most exciting artists with diverse practices, allowing kids to develop a broad understanding of what it means to be an artist. The series encourages children to actively participate in art making by helping them recognise their own creative voice. Whether children and families are visiting in person, or accessing QAGOMA digitally, we want them to be able to experience the imaginative world of art and what QAGOMA has to offer. Through Outside the Lines, kids can connect through the power of audio.”
Kinderling Kids managing director Lorna Clarkson said: “QAGOMA and Kinderling have been partners for over five years now, beginning with Kinderling promoting the gallery’s children’s art centre and exhibitions. Since then, we’ve seen the potential of growing this collaboration by leveraging the power of immersive audio and listening. Podcasts are an incredibly creative medium, and with Outside The Lines , we’ve been able to build a world that inspires kids to be creative while expanding their art literacy. It’s also a tool for parents looking for screen-free, educational entertainment for their children. Families can listen together and be inspired to start creating together.”
The first three episodes of Outside The Lines – A QAGOMA Kids Podcast About Art are available now and can be listened to for free as a podcast, on the Kinderling Kids App or streamed daily at 8am on Kinderling Kids, with a new episode released every Wednesday.
