Kim Kardashian Leads Celebrity Instagram Boycott… For One Day

A host of big-name celebrities, led by Kim Kardashian West, are freezing their social media accounts for 24 hours as part of the #StopHateForProfit campaign against Facebook.

Other celebrities taking part in the demonstration include Leonardo DiCaprio, Sacha Baron Choen, Jamie Foxx, Katy Perry, Demi Lovato, Cara Delevegne, Gwyneth Paltrow, Naomi Cambell, Sebastian Stan, Nick Kroll, Rachel Zoe, Isla Fisher, Natalie Portman, Sarah Silverman, Ashton Kutcher, and many more.

Kardashian West took to Twitter on Tuesday to explain her stance against Facebook.

“I love that I can connect directly with you through Instagram and Facebook, but I can’t sit by and stay silent while these platforms continue to allow the spreading of hate, propaganda and misinformation – created by groups to sow division and split America apart – only to take steps after people are killed,” she said.

“Misinformation shared on social media has a serious impact on our elections and undermines our democracy.  Please join me tomorrow when I will be “freezing” my Instagram and FB account to tell Facebook to #StopHateForProfit.”

Katy Perry also posted about the campaign to her 107 million followers.

It is reminiscent of the social media advertising boycott led by some of the world’s biggest advertisers earlier this year, following the #BlackLivesMatter movement.

Diageo, Coca-Cola, Unilever, North Face and Patagonia,  and Starbucks all pressed pause on their social advertising spend.

And while the Kardashian-led Instagram boycott will no doubt raise awareness to the issue at hand, many have questioned whether a one day demonstration will be effective.
