Federal Government Unveils Latest COVID PSA Aimed At Gen Ys

The federal government has unveiled a new campaign aimed at 20 somethings with the message that catching COVID-19 can be deadly if they then pass it on to older and more vulnerable relatives.

The campaign depicts a mother who is in an ICU battling COVID-19, as her younger son talks about how the virus spread to him from a coronavirus-positive work colleague who presented with mild cold-like symptoms 15 days ago.

“Tom said he just had a cold, he works with Sophie who said she just had a sniffle,” the campaign explains.

The ad will start running this week across a range of media.

The new work comes after Australia’s deputy chief medical officer Nick Coatsworth warned that young people are often likely to ignore the mild symptoms of the virus and then pass it on to older relatives.

Coatsworth noted: “Often it is very difficult when you have mild symptoms from a respiratory virus to convince yourself you need to stay home and get tested, but it is so critically important that we do.

“Unlike influenza, COVID-19 predominantly spreads through the age group of 20 to 29-year-olds,” Coatsworth added.

The ad follows news yesterday that Victoria had suffered its heaviest number of COVID deaths, with some 25 people succumbing to the virus. And news over the weekend that a man in his 20s had died, the youngest recorded victim in Australia.
