Thursday TV Wrap: Footy Returns To 535,000 And Kicks Nine To A Big Win

Sports fans’ desperate need to watch anything following a CV-19-inspired drought over the past few months saw 535,000 viewers tune into last night’s NRL return match that saw the Parramatta Eels triumph over the Brisbane Broncos by 34-6 in front of a completely empty Suncorp Stadium.

The number was OzTAM metro numbers, while a further 683,000 tuned in for Foxtel’s coverage.

Arguably, it was a shrewd move by the NRL and Nine as both the Eels and the Broncos typically pull big TV audiences in their respective home towns of Sydney and Brisbane.

Commenting on the game’s appeal, Foxtel Media CEO Mark Frain told B&T: “Like most of Australia, we are delighted to welcome back the NRL to Australian screens. Last night 683,000 people tuned in to watch the Eels triumph against the Broncos! What a record breaking night for Foxtel and Foxtel Media.

“With the NRL rights now secured we are excited to be offering an unprecedented depth of coverage for audiences on Foxtel, and of course to be offering the best platform for advertisers to connect with footy fans. As the home of NRL til 2027, there is no better place to reach sports audiences than Foxtel,” Frain said.

It also handed Nine a convincing Thursday night win taking home 30.3 per cent of all of last night’s eyeballs (all channels). Seven had 23.6 per cent, 10 was inches behind with 22.1 per cent, the ABC did 15.2 per cent and SBS managed 8.8 per cent.

Seven bagged the most-watched show of the evening – its 6pm news pulling 1.1 million. While MasterChef was the most-watched entertainment show with 960,000.

Other standouts for Nine included its 6pm news (1.06 million), ACA (735,000) and Hot Seat (570,000).

10 did well with The Project (559,000) and 10 News First (392,000).

Over at Seven, The Chase did 615,000 and Home And Away did 524,000.

The ABC’s evening ran thus: 7pm news (801,000), 7.30 (572,000), Sammy J (418,000) and Grand Designs Australia (328,000).
