Twitter Jumps On The Stories Bandwagon With ‘Fleets’

Twitter has given us the first glimpse of ‘Fleets’, the new short-lasting content format on the platform.

The social media platform is currently testing the new innovation in Brazil, to see whether self-destructing content resonates with users like it does on other platforms, like Instagram and Snapchat.

Fleets cannot be liked, retweeted, or commented on by others and, like with Instagram stories and Snapchat stories, will be automatically deleted 24 hours after being posted.

Just days after it was announced, Brazilian tech journalist Filipe Espósito has shared one of the first reviews of the new technology.

“For now, Fleets still lacks many features to be considered an interesting option for users, besides being very buggy and confusing about some things. Still, I can see a certain potential on that platform,” he said.

Users can upload photos, videos and GIFs, as well as text.

There are fewer design capabilities on Fleets compared with Instagram and Snapchat.

However, the appeal of such a format on the platform is to encourage users to share their thoughts without the fear of old posts being brought back to light at a later date, as we have seen happen frequently on Twitter.

There is also an appeal for advertisers.

If Instagram is anything to go by, self-destructing Fleets could serve as a way for brands to get in front of a hyper-targeted audience.
