Study: Toyota Tops Aussies’ Intended Car Buying List, As SUVs Dominate

Japanese marque Toyota has topped the list of the car Australians are most likely to consider if they were to buy a new vehicle in the next four years.

According to new research by Roy Morgan, the percentage of Australian ‘new vehicle intenders’ planning on purchasing a Toyota was 16.8 per cent (322,000), followed by Mazda on 8.7 per cent (168,000), Hyundai 7.6 per cent (145,000), Volkswagen six per cent (115,000), Mercedes-Benz 3.8 per cent (72,000), Holden 3.6 per cent (69,000), Nissan 3.4 per cent (64,000), Ford and Subaru both 3.3 per cent (63,000), Honda 3.1 per cent (60,000), Audi 2.7 per cent (52,000), BMW 2.5 per cent (48,000), Mitsubishi 2.4 per cent (46,000) and Lexus 1.2 per cent (24,000).

8187-c1Looking at the types, rather than makes, of vehicles Australian intenders are set on buying, SUVs are the most popular, with 40 per cent (768,000) of intenders planning on a sports utility vehicle as their next purchase. This is followed by passenger vehicles on 35.1 per cent (674,000) and commercial vehicles on 8.1 per cent (155,000).
