Facebook To Hide Likes Count After “Positive Feedback” From Instagram Trial

Nizhnevartovsk, Russia - September 6, 2012: Close up shot Facebook like button on monitor screen. Famous feature of the social network Facebook.

Facebook will begin hiding ‘likes’ on its own site in Australia, extending the trial that began on Instagram some months ago.

The latest trial will be exclusive to Australia and will start rolling out today, as users will no longer see the number or likes, reactions and videos on other’s posts.

Likes will only be visible to the author of the post.

Facebook Australia’s director of policy Mia Garlick said the change was based on wellbeing research.
“We’ve had really positive feedback from a lot of the anti-bullying groups and mental health organisations that we work with,” Ms Garlick told AAP on response to the change,” said Garlick.
“It really is just taking that number out of the equation, so that people can focus on the quality of their interactions and the quality of the content rather than on the number of likes or reactions.”
Garlick said the change was based on “initial positive feedback” around the decision to hide likes on Instagram.
“We think this is a great country where we can get some really good feedback about whether this is a valuable experience for people on our services or not.”
Garlick said the changes will not impact busiensses that rely on Facebook’s metrics for their social media marketing.
