Lowest Prices Are Just The Beginning: Bunnings Prepares For Amazon’s Gardening Challenge

Beloved Australian gardening and hardware store Bunnings has some very powerful competition.

Ecommerce giant Amazon has today announced the launch of a new online garden store for Australians, which hopes to get more Australians outdoors as the warmer months roll in.

Amazon’s foray into gardening will see the company delivering pool supplies, outdoor furniture, barbecues and gardening tools to the doors of Australians.

“Australians love the outdoors and as the temperature starts to warm up, there’s no better time to get outside and relax, unwind or entertain in your outdoor space,” said Amazon Australia country manager Rocco Braeuniger.

“Our Garden store adds to the over 125 million products already available on Amazon.com.au, underscored by great value and fast delivery.”

To prepare for the launch, Amazon commissioned research to study the outdoors habits of Australians.

It found younger people are the most enthusiastic gardeners, with 75 per cent of Millenials indicating they grow their own organic fruit, vegetables or herbs.

Overall, 65 per cent of Aussies said they are interested in growing organic fruit, vegetables or herbs.

Somewhat surprisingly, 15 per cent of respondents said they would be keen to give beekeeping a try, which is perhaps why Amazon is selling a beekeeping suit for $31.49.

Should Bunnings be worried?

The launch of Amazon’s gardening marketplace comes on the eve of Bunnings officially opening its long-awaited online store.

Bunnings has recently completed a trial of its ‘Click and Collect’ offering in Tasmania and aims to have the online marketplace live by the end of the year.

Despite the rise of digitisation and eCommerce in recent years, Bunnings has enjoyed continued success with a relatively minimal online offering, only launching its first online shopping trial at the beginning of 2018.

Star power

In typical Amazon fashion, the company has recruited the help of some local talent to get things up and running.

Selling Houses Australia co-host Charlie Albone has teamed up with Amazon for the project.

“I’m excited the Amazon Australia has launched a Garden store giving Australians the chance to shop a range of quality local and international outdoor equipment with the convenience of delivery straight to their front door,” he said.

“Working in the landscaping industry, I’ve seen many outdoor trends come and go over the years, but one thing is a certainty and that is that Australians love the great outdoors.”
