Thursday Night TV Wrap: Footy Fans Don’t Stay Up For World Cup Opener

SBS’s FIFA World Cup coverage is off to a lacklustre start after just 147,000 fans tuned-in for last night’s opener between host nation Russia and Saudi Arabia.

But to give its dues, the match didn’t kick-off until midnight and when it did SBS was the most-watched of all the networks.

In a slow night of TV all-round, Seven won the night (30 per cent audience share) on the back of its 6pm news bulletin (943,000), The Chase (618,000), Home And Away (601,000) and the AFL (416,000).

Nine was second (26.6 per cent) with its best being its 6pm news bulletin (937,000), ACA (739,000), Hot Seat (539,000) and the NRL match (350,000 in three cities).

For Ten (19.7 per cent), its best were MasterChef (787,000) and The Project (488,000).

Over at the ABC (15 per cent), its 7pm news bulletin was its standout (657,000), followed by 7:30 (514,000), Grand Designs Australia (512,000), QI (310,000), Sammy J (293,000), Think Tank (216,000).

SBS’ best was The Handmaid’s Tale with 226,000.
