Twitter Experiments With 280-Character Tweets

Social media giant Twitter has announced it is experimenting with 280-character tweets.

The experiment is being trialled with a small group of people using languages impacted by cramming, like English.

Based on extensive data analysis, Twitter found 280 characters will allow people tweeting in phonetic languages to express themselves as equally and easily as people tweeting in Chinese, Japanese and Korean already can with 140 characters.

“We understand since many of you have been Tweeting for years, there may be an emotional attachment to 140 characters – we felt it, too,” a joint blog post by Twitter product manager Aliza Rosen and senior software engineer Ikuhiro Ihara said.

“But we tried this, saw the power of what it will do, and fell in love with this new, still brief, constraint. We are excited to share this today, and we will keep you posted about what we see and what comes next.”
