ABC’s Chief Operating Officer Calls It Quits

ABC managing director Michelle Guthrie has confirmed that chief operating officer David Pendleton has stepped down from his role after 20 years at the organisation.

Pendleton has worked as the ABC’s chief operating officer since 2004. Prior to that, he was the organisation’s director of finance and support services, and also worked previously as its general manager of group audit.

Pendleton’s resignation is the fourth from the executive team since Guthrie took over the role of managing director from Mark Scott in May 2016, according to the ABC, and comes ahead of a major restructure at the organisation. The most recent exit was director of television, Richard Finlayson, who resigned last week.

Guthrie acknowledged in a statement the “pivotal” role Pendleton has played in shaping the operational base of the ABC and in its digital expansion.

“Dave has provided outstanding service to a succession of ABC boards and managing directors, and his operational knowledge and financial expertise will be sorely missed,” She said.

“His input, guidance and leadership have been invaluable in managing one of the most complex media organisations in the country.”
