Aussie Golfer Jason Day Finds Pay Dirt In Mega Nike Deal

Aussie Golfer Jason Day Finds Pay Dirt In Mega Nike Deal

When the Forbes list of the world’s highest paid sports stars arrived in the B&T office last June it was disappointing to see a sole Aussie in the top 100 – world number one golfer, Jason Day.

According to the Forbes list, Day – ranked 64th on the list – was worth a cool $US23.6 million annually. Just over $US15 million was from winning tournaments while the rest was made up in endorsements.

However, that’s set to change with reports that the Aussie is set to sign a new deal with Nike to wear its apparel for $US10 million a year.

Nike pulled out of the clubs and balls market last month and will now concentrate on its golf wear, such as shirts, shoes and caps.

That means Day can retain his equipment sponsor, TaylorMade, without conflicting with his new apparel sponsor.

The new deal is yet to be confirmed but has been reported on the respected US sports site ESPN.com.

ESPN has reported that Nike is keen to sponsor a player who is a consistent performer, hence why it went for the Aussie. The sportswear giant also has deals with Rory McIlroy, whose form of late has been all over the shop. It also has a deal with Tiger Woods, although he has enough well-documented problems of his own.

The 28-year old Day may also appeal to Millennials who apparently find golf uncool and something your dad plays.
