Women In Media: It’s Maxus Melbourne MD Karly Leach

Maxus Melbourne managing director Karly Leach is our next exceptional media personality to reveal all in B&T’s Women In Media. Here, Leach talks fish tacos, what her staff really think of her and why she reckons a sales background can be invaluable…

The current Google campaign is really good….
You watch MasterChef and they make fish tacos, then the first ad is from Google talking about fish tacos. I love all the new technology!

I think a leader is…
A person who inspires and motivates you to want to be better. You look up to them and want to follow in their footsteps.

The five words my staff would describe me as would be…
Honest, fair, reliable, trustworthy, tough

At university I wish I’d done a course that included work experience…
The media course at RMIT includes an internship now – that would have been really valuable to make the learning at uni more tangible.

Learning to express yourself and communicate properly…
Would be some advice I’d give to my younger self. It took me a long time to be comfortable with confrontation and saying what I thought – it’s such an important skill in business when you can do it the right way!

My ultimate career goal is to make a difference to work/life balance within the industry…
Maxus has a good reputation for that. We don’t encourage long hours or weekend work but it’s still an intense job so you need to work out how to turn your brain off. It’s not easy and it’s something I had to learn for myself. We have yoga classes and counsellors available for the team – Group M has really taken that on board and made it a priority. It’s so important to the culture of a business.

My sales background has been invaluable…
At the start of my career, I was a sales rep at Ten working closely with the Maxus team. I was in the Maxus office a couple of days each week. When they approached me in 2006 to work for them, it was a natural progression. Sales gave me an understanding of what the other party needs to get out of the relationship and how it can work for the client. It gives you good perspective.
