Another Week, Yet Another Zoo Weekly Cock-up!
Once again Lad’s magazine Zoo Weekly is in a spot of trouble for an article about ‘top ten survival tips for homeless blokes’.
In its latest misdemeanour, the Bauer-owned mag has published an article which makes homelessness less of a serious issue and more of a ‘fun’ outdoorsy adventure.
B&T contacted ZOO Weekly for comment; however our calls had not been returned at the time of publishing.
Zoo Weekly’s article includes tips like “a lot of homeless people recommend getting spruced up in the bathroom at a big shopping mall or supermarket; they’re clean and you’re less likely to be bothered.”
“A collapsible pail you can carry around in a backpack is a good idea too. It’s a movable sink,” is another suggestion.
Currently there are 105,237 homeless people in Australia.
Council to Homeless Persons CEO Jenny Smith told News Corp “Zoo’s ‘top ten survival tips for homeless blokes’ treats homelessness like some wilderness trekking adventure. In reality, it’s the last stop in a series of often horrible life events.”
“Homelessness isn’t a safari or an adventure, it’s a horrible situation and frankly some people don’t survive it.
“Zoo might like to encourage its readers to think about what sleeping rough in Melbourne is like night after night: cold, lonely and debilitating,” said Smith.
This is just one of many faux pas from the dwindling magazine in the past six months. Earlier this year, Zoo had to remove its ‘special ANZAC centenary issue’ from its social media pages because it featured a bikini-clad model holding a commemorative poppy.
Despite plummeting circulation and the constant bad press, Bauer bosses have stuck by the maligned title. It’s thought that may have something to with the existing license with its UK parent.
Twitter reaction:
@theheraldsun @MelTankardReist @ZOO slammed for making fun of the homeless but it's perpetuation of rape culture goes unnoticed.
