The AI Penis Detector Fighting Against Google

Web browser Mozilla is protesting against Google in perhaps the most bizarre way possible – with an AI penis detector.

The gimmicky site, aptly named donotdrawapenis.com, allows users to make various doodles on a blank canvas.

Draw a penis, however, and the technology will detect what has happened and automatically erase it, telling you something along the lines of “Don’t take individual expression too far!”

Developed by Mozilla and Dutch design studio Moniker, the site is a response to ‘Quick, Draw’, the Pictionary-like game Google developed in 2016 in which AI would guess what you were trying to doodle.

The technology learnt to recognise 15 million drawings from 345 categories, but never the penis.

Do Not Draw a Penis aims to highlight the way in which tech giants like Google are dictating moral standards.

“To us doodling a penis is a light-hearted symbol for a rebellious act,” Moniker’s Roel Wouters told The Verge.

“The point is that we think our moral compasses should not be in the hands of big tech.

“We question the fact that we gave the responsibility for our social infrastructure away in exchange for “free” usage without even realising.”

Moniker has so far collected 10,000 doodles on the site and has even created a tea towel featuring a collection of the artworks, which you can buy online for €21($AUD34.30).
