“It’s Not Mean If You’re Right!” Fast Food Rival Roasts Macca’s Filet-O-Fish In Witty Rap Campaign

Easily the most divisive item on the McDonald’s menu is the long-suffering and oft maligned Filet-O-Fish. A generally deplorable burger that appears to only ever be ordered by customers assuming it’s healthy or drunks.

Now Macca’s rival in the States, sandwich chain Arby’s, is set to play in the fish space and in doing so has released a rap video campaign dissing its rival’s seafood efforts.

Arby’s has partnered with rapper Pusha T to record a music video to promote its new Spicy Fish Sandwich and all at the Filet-O-Fish’s expense.

Pusha T raps: “Filet-O-Fish is ***, and you should be disgusted, how dare you sell a square fish asking us to trust it, a half slice of cheese, Mickey D’s on a budget?”

Ironically, Pusha T has publicly stated he first came up with McDonald’s’ famous “I’m lovin’ it” in a song he wrote with his brother, rapper No Malice, back in 2003.

He recently told Rolling Stone the brothers were paid $US1 million at the time for the line, which Pusha T called “peanuts for as long as that’s been running”.

“I am solely responsible for the ’I’m Lovin‘ It’ swag and the jingle of that company,” he said in the interview. “That’s just real. I am the reason.”

Not that Macca’s has commented on Arby’s work, but the world’s biggest fast food chain must be more than annoyed that its rival’s – Burger King, in particular – marketing strategies seem to follow a similar line of degrading its menu items.

Said Arby’s CMO Patrick Schwing: “Once we got the product right and we felt like we could have that confidence, we could say, ‘look, we’re noticeably superior … we have a better product.’ And we’re very confident that that confidence in the product then gets portrayed in the commercial. And we thought: what are fun ways to be competitive? Because we do want to draw a stark difference. And honestly, it’s not mean if you’re right, so we felt comfortable doing that.”
