“Not Lovin’ It!” McDonald’s Ad Bragging About $12 An Hour Jobs Cops Social Media Roasting

McDonald’s in the US is so desperate for staff it’s begun running advertising in-store to find new recruits.

The poster ads feature 12 one-dollar US bills and extol that that’s now the starting rate for any new burger flipper. Twelve US dollars is equal to $16.85 in Aussie money.

However, the ads, that sprung up in restaurants last Thursday, quickly attracted the ire of social media users who believed 12 bucks an hour was “insulting”.

For the record, the starting salary for a junior in Australia is as low as $13 per hour, while McDonald’s claims the average hourly rate of all its local employees is $23.25.

One person tweeted about the recruitment drive: “I actually find this more insulting than anything.”

Another added: “Gee golly twelve WHOLE dollars, mr manager sir?”

Others took to Photoshopping the ad to highlight their displeasure.

One showed a pile of McDonald’s nuggets, with the same “now starting at” and “an hour” above and below the food.

Another made an expletive version of the advert, with dollar bills spelling out “fuck you”. The designer used 23 dollar bills to spell out the profanity, “the amount they should be paying their employees!”

In May this year, McDonald’s in the US announced it was raising the pay at 650 company-owned stores across the US as part of its push to hire thousands of new workers in a tight labor market.

The company has said it wants the minimum wage at its restaurants to be $US13 per hour, rising to $US15 by 2024.

However, the vast majority of McDonald’s nearly 14,000 US stores – some 95 per cent – are owned by franchisees who set their own rates of pay. The restaurants head office in Chicago has been actively petitioning franchisees to boost pay to workers too.
