Cara Delevingne’s “Peg The Patriarchy” Met Gala Look Accused Of Ripping Off Sex Educator
Model, Cara Delevingne made headlines when she appeared at The Met Gala wearing a custom Dior vest with the phrase, “Peg The Patriarchy.” However, a sex educator is calling out the model for not crediting her.
According to Paper, the phrase was coined by Canadian, queer sex educator and coach, Luna Matatas. Matatas, has been selling merch with the phrase, “Peg The Patriarchy,” for years and trademarked the phrase way back in 2015.
Matatas told Paper, “I did it to protect my business as a fat queer woman of colour.”
Since then, Matatas has been selling the design and sharing with her audience, what ‘Pegging The Patriarchy’ means to her. “Peg the Patriarchy is about subversion, not about an anal sex act and not about men.”
However, in a video for Vogue, Delevingne talks about coming up with the concept for the look, with designer Maria Grazia.
Delevingne said: “This year, I’m wearing Dior Maria Grazia, we kind of designed, well, I kind of had an idea for the concept, and they really made it come to fruition.” Matatas was not credited by the model.
Delevingne also explained the phrase is about men and about the anal sex act.
Of course, Matatas didn’t know Delevingne would be wearing the slogan, ‘Peg The Patriarchy,’ until she came across her Met Gala look on Twitter. Matatas also clarified on Twitter that neither Delevingne nor Dior reached out to ask if they could use her phrase.
Matatas told Buzzfeed, “When I realised the designer was Dior, I was like oh, god.
“It’s classic appropriation. We’re talking about people with a lot of privilege. It really would have been so easy for us to link arms and lift each other up.”
Matatas, who has over 30 thousand followers on Instagram, also took to social media to call out The Met Gala look.
Matatas wrote on Instagram: “While I’m giddy that Peg the Patriarch made it to The Met Gala, @caradelevingne co-owner of @loradicarlo_hq tried to pull it off as their own. No credit to me, the creator and owner of the trademark.
“This happens to small artists all the time. So much so that I have an assistant whose job includes finding and tracing people printing and selling Peg the Patriarchy.
“Remember that as a fat, queer, POC I am working twice as hard just to do what I’m already amazing at. From censorship to patriarchy to racism, all biz barriers specific to my social location.
“Enter sex shop co-owner at Met Gala with a custom-designed vest with Peg the Patriarchy on it. What’s grossest for me is the media interviews – with Cara blatantly owning it as if it wasn’t already owned. Sound familiar? Coughs in colonialism.”
Matatas also took to Twitter to thank everyone for their support.
I feel so loved and supported. Thank you for everyone tagging and reaching out about Peg the Patriarchy® being at the #MetGala 🥰. @Caradelevingne co-owner of @LoraDiCarlo_HQ didn't credit or mention me, so you an support me by buying my art and continuing to tag me. 💗🖤
