B&T’s Tokyo Olympics Recap: Tributes, Singing & Tweets
The Olympics seems to have arrived at the perfect time for Australians. It has filled the news with feel-good stories and managed to give Aussies something to talk about besides COVID-19, and there is a lot to talk about!
BBC reporter Clare Balding was interviewing two UK swimmers, Tom Dean and Matthew Richards when she accidentally put her foot in it.
The reporter asked the poorly worded question, “You’re 18 years old, it’s your first Olympics, and you swam, honestly, your third leg was just phenomenal.”
Both swimmers had to stop themselves from laughing, before – to their credit – responding maturely.
The clip has since gone viral on TikTok, racking up almost one million views.

Arguably, part of being Australian is loving tennis player Ash Barty. However, she’s managed to make herself even more lovable after posting a heartfelt tribute to her mate and rival, Netherlands tennis player Kiki Bertens, on Twitter.
The tribute came after Bertens finished her last ever professional game of tennis.
Thankfully, Barty hasn’t even mentioned retiring. Australia has barely recovered from losing Leyton Hewitt, and no one liked him nearly as much.
Congratulations on an inspiring career, my friend ✨
I am proud to call you a mate and loved every single one of our battles over the years.
We’ll miss your smile, your passion and your fight. Enjoy the next chapter, Kiki – you’ve more than earned it 🧡

Barty’s Tweet has since received thousands of likes and allegedly not all from Australians.
An awkward moment transpired after New Zealand won gold in the women’s pair rowing.
Russian rower Elena Oriabinskaia made an error when, after winning silver, she accidentally grabbed the wrong medal and nabbed herself a gold one.
Her Russian teammates then had to awkwardly point out her mistake. Orianbinskaia then quickly put the gold medal back, but at least she can say she’s touched a gold medal.
Incredibly, everyone managed not to laugh.
Here at B&T, we aren’t saying it is funny but we aren’t saying it isn’t funny!
In musical news, the Fiji rugby team have gone viral for showing off their singing skills.
The boys celebrated their gold medal win by breaking into song, and they weren’t bad either.

Their musical moment made them viral on Twitter.
What a moment. Fiji’s rugby team sing their hearts out for their nation after winning gold. This is a team that had to come here on a freight plane, and spent months away from their families because of covid. pic.twitter.com/IdIQRpUuFS

Gold medal athletes with gold medal voices—moments like these are what make the world fall in love with the #Olympics. You can just feel the emotion, and it’s perfect. Congratulations, #Figi, on winning gold, and thank you to your Rugby team for giving us this! #StrongerTogether https://t.co/OVi2y8fftc

Hopefully, Baz Luhrmann discovers them soon.
In completely heartwarming news, Australian Canoer, Jess Fox, won Gold while her Dad, Richard Fox, worked as an official commentator on the event.
Fox’s Dad did have a parenting moment during the event when he admitted he was worried about his daughter because she refuses to tie her hair up.
He explained, he was concerned it would get caught on a pole and cause a foul. Something he admitted he had spoken to her about, but she had ignored him.
Sadly, this proves even when competing for gold, your parents can still criticise you.
Otherwise, Fox managed to stay incredibly calm while commenting on his daughter’s event.
Thankfully, the younger Fox managed to win Gold even with her hair down.
Her Dad was then able to congratulate her on-air by telling her how much he loved her.
Fox’s Dad then received praise on Twitter for managing to keep his cool, while commentating on his daughter’s event.
I presume, like Jess Fox’s dad, my dad is at home commentating my games

Finally, in arguably the most important Olympics news, UK diver and recent gold medalist Tom Daly announced he has knitted a cosy for his first gold medal.
@7olympics @tomdaley stitched a little cozy for his gold medal 🥺 🇬🇧 #unitedkingdom #uk #olympics #olympicspirit
Daly explained that knitting had kept him sane during the last year, and then debuted his gold medal cosy, that is of course very, very English.
The Olympics truly does have something for everybody.
