2GB’s Brian Wilshire To Depart, Replacement Yet To Be Made

Brian Wilshire, who hosts 2GB’s Overnight program, will leave the station after an illustrious 46-year career in radio.

Wilshire, who hosts the weeknight show from 12.00am to 3.30am, is leaving 2GB and heading North to concentrate on writing his next book. Wilshire has already published four books, including bestseller The Fine Print. His last Overnight program will be on Friday December 11th.

Wilshire began his career in radio in 1969 at 2NZ Inverell, before moving to 2TM Tamworth and 2CA Canberra. In 1974 he relocated to Sydney as a newsreader at 2UE, and four years later he was invited to present the Saturday and Sunday night open line shows, while continuing as a newsreader on weekdays.

He joined 2GB in 1979 on the Weeknights program and in 1981, Wilshire pioneered the “Midnight Matchmaker” program which ran for nine years. He also created the “Instant Drama” show where callers would ad-lib dramatic episodes and which would later become known as Theatre Sports.

“After 46 fantastic years in radio, I’ve finally decided that it’s time for a break to look after my health and finish that next book,” Wilshire said.

“The reason I went into radio in the first place was that, with the fatal blow to the beachcombing industry provided by the advent of no-deposit soft drink bottles in NSW, it appeared to be the best way to fund my motor racing habit. The highlight of that hobby was a class win in the 1993 Bathurst 12-hour race for production cars, in a Nissan Pulsar SSS. Radio has been an equally wild ride and I’d like to thank my loyal listeners and everyone at 2GB.”

Macquarie Media Sydney operations director Paul Bowd said: “Brian has enjoyed an incredibly long and successful career in radio and achieved some enviable milestones. While we’ll miss him in the 2GB studio, we wish Brian all the very best for the future.”

Wilshire’s replacement will be announced shortly.
