Government Contemplates Massive Licence Fee Cut For TV Broadcasters

The federal government is contemplating a massive reduction in broadcast licence fees for the free-to-air TV networks as part of the federal budget, according to reports.

As part of the federal budget, Fairfax understands the government is looking at potentially getting rid of the current licence fee model, which sees commercial free-to-air broadcasters paying 3.375 per cent of their TV revenues, and replacing it with a flat fee structure.

The new flat fee model would see licence fees for metro and regional broadcasters drop by more than $100 million.

The government is even pondering whether or not to completely scrap the licence fees, which would then include some offsetting measures, according to Fairfax.

The proposed licence fee changes structure will be part of a new media reform package that’s being developed by Communications Minister Mitch Fifield.
