Report: As Inflation And Cost Of Living Hits, Aussies Are Turning To Side Hustles

Digital intelligence platform Similarweb has revealed that the number of Australians using OnlyFans, Uber and other side hustles has grown significantly YoY against last year’s numbers.

With economic pressures increasing and cost of living continuing to rise, Similarweb found that despite record low unemployment rates, interest in side hustles is growing exponentially as people look to make ends meet.

In 2022, Doordash has seen an astronomical growth rate of more than 1150 percent to its ‘Dasher’ site for delivery drivers. This is likely in part due to its lower 2021 numbers, but remains impressive nonetheless.

The second fast growing is Amazon Flex – this website is for people who want to sign up to become Amazon delivery drivers using their own vehicles – with more than double the traffic this year compared to 2021. Uber’s ‘Join’ subdomain is the sign-up page for people wanting to join Uber as a driver and has seen a 70 per cent traffic increase year-on-year.

Although OnlyFans does not have a dedicated domain for content creators like the previous sites, when users want to monetise their content they have to select a “subscription” fee for their fans through the Account Settings page. When analysing the local traffic to this section of the site, Similarweb found more Australians are looking to make money through OnlyFans.

Between April and May 2022, there was a 90 per cent increase in traffic to the “subscription” subdomain on OnlyFans, while between June and July this year there was a 67 per cent surge in people looking to monetise their content on the site.
