The Robo-Pocalypse Is Upon Us! Google’s DeepMind Says It’s Close To Achieving ‘Human-Level’ AI

London-based tech firm DeepMind, who are owned by Google, have revealed that they’ve solved all the greatest problems in developing an artificial intelligence (AI) unit which can operate on the same level as humans.

The comments came by a research scientist at the company, Nando de Freitas, who pointed out that in regards the challenges behind achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI), “the game is over!”

AGI has yet to be achieved however, as that would mean that there are machines out there that can think, learn and move just like ordinary people, without the need of any prior training – a rather scary scenario to say the least!

De Freitas pointed out that in order to get to that point of creating an AGI, the AI programs that already exist need significant upscaling in both their data and their processing capabilities.

These comments by the researcher came via his Twitter profile in response to an opinion article published by The Next Web, which pointed out that people will never achieve AGI.

De Freitas responded: “My opinion: It’s all about scale now! The Game is Over! It’s about making these models bigger, safer, compute efficient, faster at sampling, smarter memory, more modalities…”

However, the DeepMind worker admitted that there’s still a lot of work required to create an AI that can behave exactly like an ordinary person.

The company recently unveiled their latest AI called ‘Gato’, which is capable of performing over 600 tasks on the same level as an ordinary person and can respond to requests.

Among the things ‘Gato’ can do is talk to people, stack blocks and play basic video games.

‘Gato’ works with a central operating system that carries information throughout its different areas, highly reminiscent of our own nervous system.

While it may not be like bumping into someone you know on the street just yet, the accelerated rate at which AI are becoming more and more human-like, is definitely impressive – or frightening. Take your pick!
