Protein & MCA Launch COVID-19 App To Help Australian Migrants

Migrant Council Australia (MCA) originated the initiative to offer migrants the same opportunity afforded English speaking Australian’s through the official Government Apps.

MCA engaged Digital Agency, Protein One with the task of creating the App within a four week timeline. Protein’s team, working remotely across Sydney and Berlin created a 24/7 pipeline to deliver the App from creative design, user experience, animations, interactive and development for both iOS and Android.

Protein’s Director, Galvin Scott Davis stated, “When MCA approached us with the project, we recognised the importance and positive impact the project would have for Australia.  A huge project to undertake, no matter the timeline or the displacement that we are all experiencing. We quickly designed a production strategy that would allow us to deliver all aspects of the creative and digital delivery, without compromising design or technology. The result is an App that we believe is the optimum experience for the public to discover everything regarding COVID-19 in Australia, whether in English or any other language”.

MCA’s CEO, Carla Wilshire elaborated, “We partnered with Protein because we knew UX and design would make or break the App. An accessible, multi-language, user-friendly experience that broke content into understandable, engaging and non-threatening form was the goal. Well over a million people are currently living in Australia that do not have proficient English. Getting information is key to looking after yourself and your family. Australia is a migration nation and a significant portion of our population has language and cultural barriers they face in accessing services. In Protein we have found an agency partner that could handle both the creative and immense technology challenges the project posed.“

Digital solutions such as the MyAus COVID-19 App work in a time of crisis. Helping Australia’s migrant community with a digital solution to support them during the COVID-19 pandemic is just one way companies are using tech to support those less fortunate.

The App uses character-based education and the ability to switch seamlessly between English and multiple native languages including Greek, Italian, Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish and more. With another twelve languages coming soon.
