B&T’s Fast 30: Kim K & UberEats, Bonds, Victoria’s Secret, Plus An Honest Chat With Two Young M&C Saatchi & Clems BBDO Strategists

Welcome back to the latest episode of B&T’s Fast 30 podcast.

In this episode, we’re discussing UberEats iconic new ad, Victoria’s Secret show axed, the homophobic tirade against Bonds’ Xmas ad, Disney+ entering the market and what it means for the proliferation of streaming services in Australia, plus Elon Musks’ Cybertruck.

Joining us to discuss the news we have two young adlanders: Vince Usher who’s a strategist at Clemenger BBDO and Max Learmont who’s a strategist at M&C Saatchi. We also get Max and Vince’s perspective on what it’s actually like being a young person in the industry, what a strategist actually does, whether strategists are still valuable, what the industry is getting both wrong and right, and we also ask the question: do young people have a strong enough voice in adland?

Kim K & “Sharon’s” UberEats ad

UberEats has again managed to pull some serious A-list talent into its ads, unveiling its latest work starring Kim Kardashian and Kath and Kim’s very own Sharon Strzelecki (aka actor Magda Szubanski). The work is by creative agency Special Group and sees both Kardashian and Strzelecki don the famous netball skirt and bib as the two struggle with poor Sharon’s Aussie accent.

Did it hit the mark?

Victoria’s secret show axed

Victoria’s Secret annual fashion show has been axed for 2019 amid falling sales and the struggle to generate any interest in the catwalk spectacle.  Parent company of Victoria’s Secret L Brand’s CFO Stuart Burgdoerfer said VS “will be communicating to customers, but nothing similar in magnitude to the fashion show.” Burgdoerfer said there wasn’t a “short-term sales response” following the last few shows. Furthermore, VS’ sales have continued to drop since late 2016.

The homophobic tirade against Bonds’ Chrissy ad

Aussie underwear giant Bonds has had its social media trolled following a Christmas campaign featuring a gay couple kissing. The still image featured a gay couple wearing Bonds briefs atop a kitchen bench and was part of a campaign the undies firm was running for Christmas. Was the campaign true to the Bonds’ brand?

Disney+ pulls content from Stan

Disney has removed content from nine-owned streaming service Stan and PayTV provider Foxtel in preparation for the launch of Disney+ in Australia. How will Disney+ compete in an already saturated market?
