“Alan Jones Hates You As Well”: Defamation Case Against Radio Veteran Turns Personal

A family who is suing Alan Jones for defamation to the tune of $4.8 million has spoken in court about the barrage of verbal and physical abuse it has suffered as a result of accusations made by the radio host.

Brothers Denis, John, Neill and Joe Wagner are suing Jones for suggesting they were responsible for the deaths of 12 people during the 2011 Grantham floods due to a wall of a quarry they owned collapsing during the natural disaster.

Jones made the accusations across 32 different broadcasts on stations 2GB and 4BC, as well as once on Sky News, during 2014 and 2015.

Joe Wagner cried in the Supreme Court in Brisbane yesterday while detailing the toll Jones’ accusations had taken on his family, according to The Australian.

Wagner said he would be questioned on a daily basis about Jones’ broadcasts during business meetings and social gatherings, forcing him to introduce himself to people with only his first name.

The youngest of the Wagner brothers also claimed his daughter had suffered verbal and physical abuse, having been shoved and told “Alan Jones hates you as well” at a gathering when she was in Year 12.

“My son, I think he would have been 12 at the time I suppose, had come home from school and one of his classmates… had mentioned to him that his parents had said that Joey Wagner’s parents are responsible for killing people at Grantham,” he added.

“To have your 12-year-old boy come home and tell you that, I just didn’t know how to handle it.”

Jones will take to the witness stand on Thursday to defend the defamation claims against him.
