“May The Fourth Be With You”! And Why Stars Wars Remains A Marketer’s Dream

“May The Fourth Be With You”! And Why Stars Wars Remains A Marketer’s Dream

Since its beginnings in 1977, Star Wars has captured the minds of billions of people. It is also a marketer’s wet dream. So to celebrate May the 4th, international Star Wars Day, B&T has put together some of the great TVCs that have used the Star Wars universe.

According to statistic brain research institute, Lucasfilm has made an estimated US$625 million in licensing and US$675 million in toys and games since 1977. In 2012, Walt Disney acquired Lucasfilm for an estimated US$4.05 billion.

Disney and J.J Abrams have been incredibly tight-lipped about what toys and products the new Star Wars trilogy will be marketing. But if you go by any of these TVCs, it could be anything from video games to soft drinks.

Adidas (2010)

Proving that Adidas has a ridiculous amount of money, Adidas recruited Daft Punk, Noel Gallagher, Snoop Dogg, David Beckham, Ian Brown, Ciara, Jay Baruchel and Franz Beckenbaur to recreate Mos Eisley’s bar scene from Star Wars Episode IV. The best thing about the super ad is that it solves the classic “who shot first debate”.

Anti-Smoking PSA (1983)

C-3PO and R2D2 warn kids of the dangers of smoking. Who knew that droids had lungs.

Volkswagen Commercial (2011)

As a kid, or maybe still as an adult, who hasn’t dreamed of using the force to move objects?

Greenpeace (2011)

Once the Volkswagen ad became a huge hit, Greenpeace spoofed it to criticise the car company for opposing cuts to CO2 emissions

Brisk (2012)

Firstly, a lightsaber duel between Yoda and Darth Maul never happened. Secondly, that cartoon doesn’t even sound like Ray Park who played Darth Maul.

Hot wheels (2014)

Hot Wheels promoted its new line of Star Wars-themed character cars and die-cast ships by creating a life-sized Darth Varder car.

The modified Chevrolet Corvette C5, incorporated a lot of Vader’s helmet details into its design, along with a 526-horsepower LS3 engin and custom red line tires.

Pepsi (1997)

SPIKE TV (2008)

Kenner Toys (1980)

Vans (2014)

Energiser Bunny (1994)

England Rugby (2015)

Kinect Video Game (2012)

Burger Chef (1977)

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will premiere in Australia on 17th December,
