The Gritty Pretty spring issue starring Hollywood megastar Drew Barrymore is now live!

In an exclusive sit down, Barrymore chats to Gritty Pretty beauty director and executive editor Danielle Gay in a wide-ranging interview that touches on growing and learning and the power of makeup.

Reflecting on past experiences and the pressures of life growing up in the spotlight, Barrymore said: “A lot of Hollywood … can have that polarity, the double-edged side of the sword that is not healthy.

“When I was caught doing my business, I was like, ‘Well, you know what? I’m going to take this as humbling, embarrassing, and, you know, really difficult, but I’m also going to take this as a way to not have to try to be an unflawed person.

“We have flaws as humans. The human condition is so complex and bizarre and beautiful, and it is not a straight line. I am a constant work in progress.

“I do therapy. I’ve tried meditation, I’ve tried exercise, I’ve tried eating healthy, I’ve tried being surrounded and loving myself, I write a lot. I marvel at the good that is out there.

“We’re so forced and inundated with the things that are broken and need to be fixed. I like to focus a lot on what we do have in common, which is love and family and wanting to take care of these people that are in our sphere.

“There are beautiful, wonderful things happening in the world. So I always find optimism. I have to find the good.”

Barrymore also opened up about her love of makeup. Barrymore said:  “I saw women walk into the trailer at five in the morning, collar up, paper in hand, glasses on and their shoulders were [hunched over] like this.

“Then they would get their hair rolled out, and the contour, and the blush and the cheeks. By the time they walked out, they carried themselves with a renewed purpose.

“That had such a profound effect on me… That was where I had my first dose of the power of makeup.”

Her beauty brand, Flower Beauty, is cruelty-free and is based on the vision of offering the most efficacious makeup and cosmetics products at an affordable price. It’s also about having fun.

Barrymore said: “I want to give as much as possible and ask for as little in return. That is my truth.

“I do not screw up at work. I will not let you down. I will give my everything to work… I think I really made this job a parent that I didn’t have because I’ve always been very accountable at work.

“I’m a consummate professional. That’s really important to me as if there is no room for error.”

Also in this issue:
