Apple Unveils The Next Generation Of Macs
Apple has confirmed a significant change to its range of computers, revealing a new MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and Mac Mini – all powered by Apple’s first in-house designed processor.
After years of rumours, Apple confirmed earlier this year it had started working on its own processors.
Today, the company revealed the M1, which is a similar kind of chip to the ones used to run iPhones and iPads.
Apple says its the most powerful chip it has ever made and will help the new devices deliver 15x faster machine learning (ML) capabilities and 2x longer battery life.
“The introduction of three new Macs featuring Apple’s breakthrough M1 chip represents a bold change that was years in the making, and marks a truly historic day for the Mac and for Apple,” said Apple CEO Tim Cook.
“M1 is by far the most powerful chip we’ve ever created, and combined with Big Sur, delivers mind-blowing performance, extraordinary battery life, and access to more software and apps than ever before. We can’t wait for our customers to experience this new generation of Mac, and we have no doubt it will help them continue to change the world.”
The new chip also promises to bring iPhones, iPads and MacBooks closer together. Macs with the M1 chip will be able to run apps designed for iPhones.
Apple is also now talking about ‘universal apps’ – apps that are built for both Apple and Intel processors. Adobe’s Lightroom will be one of the first to launch a universal app.
