Listeners Flock To Triple J As ‘Requestival’ Takes Off

triple j’s decision to let listeners control the airwaves as part of the first-ever ‘Requestival’ has proven a success for the broadcaster, with engagement going through the roof.

As of Thursday, there had been more than 73,000 song requests. Additionally, the textline is “going off” and the app has inundated with emojis (see below), according to the broadcaster.

Earlier this week we reported on some of the outlandish requests that made it to the air on day one, including the John Cena entrance theme and a song from Mulan.

And the utter absurdity of the festival has continued through the week.

Some listeners were delighted to hear the Antiques Roadshow Theme on their airwaves on Wednesday.

And at 6:48am this morning, it was the Pokemon Theme that started the day for some listeners.

As you can probably tell, triple j’s social media team has been having a blast with the songs that have been coming out.

They even got ABC Classic involved when Beethoven hit the airwaves.

As well as putting the diverse music taste of the broadcaster’s listeners on show, Requestival has also helped showcase some up-and-coming local talent, with ‘Break the Rules’ by Melbourne artist IJALE featuring for the first time yesterday.

The initiative has highlighted triple j’s reach among younger audiences.

In a release, triple j revealed almost 71 per cent of requestors so far have been under 30, with almost half (48 per cent) aged under 24.
